Nitride vs phosphate barrel

Anyone have any info on nitride finished barrels ? What exactly is nitride and is it any more durable than melonite or phosphate ? Any first hand knowledge/answers really appreciated.

Phosphate should be oiled and can wear/rust. Other options are nitride/melonite (inside and out). They cannot nitride a chrome bore but nitride is more corrosion resistent. Chrome bore is better for longevity. Nitride can have better accuracy and rust resistance (on outside) and unless doing mag dumps will last a long time also.But if the nitride barrel is 4150 and the phosphate barrel is 4140, then there is no debate at all, go with the 4150 steel that is also nitride treated. Supposedly Melonite wears slower as its something added during manufacturing, bonding it to the metal. Plus it does not effect it's accuracy. In my experience the Gen 5 finish holds up better against scratching from Kydex or anything else abrasive. It's a hard finish and takes a lot to scratch it but it quickly looses finish in high impact areas like around the barrel and under the slide hood but I can live with that because how well it ...
