WHICH boiling the water shouldnt get rid of radiation anyways. Even so, if it rains often the water should be pretty safe as contaminants dont really have enough time to build up enough to cause harm. Also, if radiation was the problem, then im pretty sure it would be harmful just to be outside when it rains. Dunno tho.

They catch not only dirt and dust blown by the wind but also feces from passing birds, dead insects, etc.. These collect in the rain gutters and get washed into the rain barrels.
