Summons calamity

It seems incredibly slow, the calamity summons are inconsistent wkth even going for an attack on pretty much every boss. Is this just a class to wait till hardmode like vanilla or did I miss something? I followed the wiki guide to bosses so I knew what to get and I just wasn't worth a damn among my friends.
